How IELTS Band Score is Calculated

The IELTS overall band score is not a simple average. While it is computed from the four section scores — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking — the result is then rounded to the nearest whole or half band using official IELTS rounding rules.

Official IELTS Rounding Rules

Step 1: Average = (Listening + Reading + Writing + Speaking) / 4

If decimal is .00 – .24 → round down to whole band

If decimal is .25 – .74 → round to .5

If decimal is .75 – .99 → round up to next whole band
