What Are the Pathways to Permanent Residency (PR) in the UK for Indian Students After Graduation?

Many Indian students aspire not only to study in the UK but also to build a long-term career and possibly settle there. Understanding the UK’s pathways to permanent residency (PR) is essential for proper planning.

### Step 1: Graduate Route Visa
After completing your degree, apply for the Graduate Route visa, which allows you to stay in the UK for 2 years (3 years for PhD holders) to work or seek employment.

### Step 2: Skilled Worker Visa
If you secure a job with a UK employer who holds a sponsor licence, you can switch to the Skilled Worker visa (formerly Tier 2). The job must meet salary and skill requirements set by the UK government.

### Step 3: Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)
After 5 years of lawful residence on a Skilled Worker visa (including time spent on the Graduate Route may not count), you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), which is the UK’s permanent residency status.

### Requirements for ILR
- 5 years of continuous lawful residence
- Meet English language and Life in the UK test requirements
- Have no serious criminal record
- Have spent no more than 180 days outside the UK in any 12-month period during your qualifying period

### Other PR Pathways
- Innovator/Start-Up Visa: For those launching businesses in the UK
- Global Talent Visa: For high-achieving individuals in academia, science, or the arts

### Tips for Success
- Keep all visa and immigration records up to date
- Build your skills and network to secure skilled employment
- Consult an immigration lawyer for complex cases

### Final Thoughts
While the path to UK permanent residency is competitive and requires careful planning, Indian students who excel academically and professionally stand a strong chance of building a future in the UK.
